INREST Gets $4.5 Million for Enviro-Actions Project in the Port of Sept-Îles

PSI Inrest CEIPSEPT-ÎLES, MARCH 10, 2022 – The Northern Institute for Research in Environment and Occupational Health and Safety (INREST) and the Port of Sept-Îles are very pleased to announce $1.998 million in funding from the Government of Quebec to create the main Enviro-Actions™ development and demonstration pilot area in the Bay of Sept-Îles.

The project will also receive a significant financial contribution of $2.5 million from the Port of Sept-Îles over the next five years, for a total budget of nearly $4.5 million. These major investments in the preservation of the Sept-Îles industrial-port (IP) zone ecosystem come courtesy of the Quebec government’s “Advantage St. Lawrence” maritime strategy, which aims to establish a smart economic corridor along the river and ensure that maritime traffic is respectful of the environment, among other objectives.

With the Enviro-Actions™ pilot project, the knowledge and tools developed in 2013 when setting up the Bay of Sept-Îles environmental monitoring observatory will be adapted so that similar observatories can be created for other IP zones in Quebec. The innovative project uses near real-time monitoring tools to preventively detect potential environmental contamination and quickly implement corrective measures, combining expertise and cutting-edge technology to assess environmental quality and adopt solutions for mitigating environmental impacts and climate change.

“The goal of the Advantage St. Lawrence strategy is to connect, organize, and unify our waterways. That’s why we’re proud to support INREST in implementing Enviro-Actions. This groundbreaking, high-potential project will make the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers a major competitive corridor conducive to the growth of our blue economy.”
Chantal Rouleau, Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region

“The operations and strategic position of the Port of Sept-Îles make it a key player in the port network of Quebec and Eastern Canada. Having a data capture system in the port zone sets it apart and supports the port’s sustainable evolution. The system is a distinctive asset for our region and will help preserve the natural environment. I am very pleased that our government is helping to safeguard the North Shore’s marine ecosystem.”
Jonatan Julien, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region, and Minister Responsible for the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine Region

“Over the past few years, INREST has demonstrated its ability to lead and carry out innovative, large-scale projects and has received valuable support from the Government of Quebec, the Port of Sept-Îles, and the community. This has allowed INREST and its CEIP (Centre for Industrial Port Expertise) division to position themselves as key players at the provincial and national levels in the preservation of ecosystems in port and industrial areas. The Government of Quebec and the Port of Sept-Îles are key partners for INREST, proving once again their willingness and commitment to prioritize environmental preservation and sustainable development.”
Dr. Julie Carrière, Executive Director, INREST and CEIP

“The Bay of Sept-Îles environmental monitoring observatory established by the Port and INREST in 2013 was the first of its kind on the St. Lawrence, paving the way for this innovative model and demonstrating regional leadership in the protection of marine ecosystems. The Port is therefore proud to provide major funding for the Enviro-Actions project, which will position our industrial-port zone as a leader in the use of instruments and the development of management tools for monitoring the precious ecosystems of Quebec’s coastal and port areas.”
Pierre D. Gagnon, President and CEO, Port of Sept-Îles

Implementing the Enviro-Actions™ model in IP zones will serve to:

  • Measure and monitor the water, air, and sound quality of IP ecosystems in near real-time
  • Create an environmental alert system for managers in IP zones to increase responsiveness before an incident occurs (prevention mode)
  • Provide all port authorities and managers in IP zones with better tools to measure the effects of their activities on the environment, respond to community expectations and concerns, and make decisions, including for the environmental management of IP zones
  • Collect credible and current data that is scientifically neutral and promotes social acceptability
  • Provide a better understanding of current environmental impacts and how these impacts will evolve in the future so that challenges and solutions for the preservation of ecosystems can be identified, with a view to sustainable development
  • Measure the results of environmental conservation and improvement efforts in IP zones
  • Use innovative big data and artificial intelligence approaches to integrate data management for the purpose of performing trend or predictive analysis, building profiles, anticipating risks, and monitoring phenomena in near real-time

2021 Port Activity Results in the Second-Best Year Since the Creation of the Sept-Îles Port Authority

SEPT-ÎLES, January 28, 2022 – With results of 32.1 M MT representing the second-best year since the creation of the port authority in 1999, the volume achieved in 2021 is however slightly lower by 3% with that of the previous year of 33.1 M MT.

This very respectable level of port activity nevertheless positions the Port of Sept-Îles in 3rd place among Canadian ports in 2021. This slight decline comes after five successive years of growth related mainly to the world-class infrastructure of the multi-user wharf in Pointe-Noire.

Lower iron ore shipments are the main reason for the variance due to certain incidents and equipment breakdowns that affected production for some producers.

However, the new year looks promising with the announcement of Quebec Iron Ore’s 7 M MT expansion project starting in the spring, as well as higher volume forecasts announced by other mining companies producing iron ore.

“These new volumes at the Port’s facilities should make it possible to cross the 40 M MT mark in 2022, setting an all-time record, as well as possibly reaching the rank of 2nd port in Canada in terms of volume of activity” declared enthusiastically Pierre D. Gagnon, President and CEO of the Port of Sept-Îles.

REGARDING THE PORT OF SEPT-ÎLES

Boasting diverse, state-of-the-art facilities, the Port of Sept-Îles is North America’s largest iron ore-handling port, with an anticipated volume of close to 40 million tonnes for 2022. It is also recognized as the most important port terminal for the primary aluminum industry in the Americas for its volume of activity. The port facilities at Sept-Îles play a vital and strategic role in the economy of Eastern Canada. The Port is also deeply committed to sustainable development, pioneering the first environmental observatory on the St. Lawrence to monitor the maritime ecosystem.

Port of Sept-Îles Welcomes First Ship in Port Waters in 2022

M/V Frontier Harvest 1er navire 2022

SEPT-ÎLES, January 10, 2022 – Flying the Japanese flag, the M/V Frontier Harvest arriving from İskenderun, Turkey, was the first ship of 2022, with arrival at 12:22 p.m. on January 4th. The ship was in ballast and will be leaving this week for Rotterdam, Netherlands with a cargo of 172,360 tonnes of iron ore pellets and concentrate from Iron Ore Company (IOC). Owned by NYK Line, the ship has a crew of 20 on board.

Due to the health restrictions in effect with the COVID-19 pandemic, the prestigious cane bearing the image of the Port of Sept-Îles was given to Captain Edgar Sulpecio Carvajal Llorente by Iron Ore Company Marine Services. The traditional New Year ceremony at the Port, where the maritime industry and the Sept-Îles business community usually gather to mark the arrival of the first ship, could not take place for a second year in a row, due to the pandemic.

Now in its 35th year, the tradition marks the arrival of the first ship of the year to call at the port. To be eligible, the vessel must come directly from a foreign country and be bound for a foreign destination.

REGARDING THE PORT OF SEPT-ÎLES CANE

Let us recall that it was in 2012, at the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the award that the traditional gold-headed cane was specially revamped to present a more contemporary version highlighting the resources of the region. Inspired by a 3D version of the Port of Sept-Îles logo, this new edition of the polished and anodized aluminum cane is stylishly reminiscent of the blue highway. The redesigned pommel contains a shard of iron ore whose lustre is reflected in an acrylic half sphere. The distinctive component of gold has not been overlooked in the new concept of the trophy. The seven stars illustrated on the logo of the Port of Sept-Îles and recalling the seven islands in the bay have been reproduced in 10-karat gold on the ring of the cane.

Ministers Rouleau and Julien Celebrate the Reopening of the Pointe-aux-Basques Intermodal Terminal with a Ribbon-cutting Ceremony

SEPT-ÎLES, October 25, 2021 – Two ministers were at the Port of Sept-Îles today to announce the new maritime infrastructure investment program for the Quebec government’s Advantage St. Lawrence vision: Chantal Rouleau, Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region, and Jonatan Julien, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region. The ministers also attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed refurbishment of the Pointe-aux-Basques terminal, which serves as an inland gateway and supply hub for isolated villages on the Lower North Shore.

The $20 million project was awarded to LFG Construction in May 2020 and financed in equal parts by the federal government’s National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF), Ministère des Transports du Québec’s maritime transport infrastructure investment support program, and the Port of Sept-Îles. It was delivered in September 2021, on time and on budget. It took over 150 workers at the height of construction to build a high-quality structure that is now better equipped for maritime and intermodal transportation, as well as climate change.

Speaking on behalf of the greater maritime region of Port Cartier and Sept Îles at the announcement that preceded the brief ceremony, the Port thanked the Government of Quebec for choosing to unveil its new Advantage St. Lawrence vision at the Port of Sept Îles, a maritime hub for major shippers such as IOC Rio Tinto, ArcelorMittal, Aluminerie Alouette, and Quebec Iron Ore and the biggest port at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. With the combined volumes of the Port of Sept Îles and ArcelorMittal’s biggest private port in Canada standing at nearly 80 million tonnes, the tonnage that transits through the region is twice as great as the tonnage shipped through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Great Lakes.

Said Pierre Gagnon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Sept-Îles, “The reopening of the Pointe aux Basques terminal during Maritime Employment Week, which promotes maritime professions at sea and on land, is extremely timely. This intermodal facility is an excellent alternative for sustainable transportation in the region and a logical and convenient bypass for the heavy road traffic on Route 138.”

“I am honoured to be in Sept-Îles to inaugurate the Pointe aux Basques terminal and announce that my government has earmarked $100 million to modernize the province’s maritime infrastructure,” said Chantal Rouleau, Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region. “This terminal is a perfect example of the type of projects that we want to support as part of the Advantage St. Lawrence vision. Proper infrastructure will make our ports more competitive and bring greater prosperity along the St. Lawrence River.”

The Hermel Exhibit Returns!

Sept-Îles, October 20, 2021 – The Port of Sept-Îles and Tourisme Sept-Îles are delighted to announce the reopening of the legendary Hermel boat exhibit. The Hermel was the boat that Mylène Paquette used in 2013 to row solo across the North Atlantic, becoming the first person ever to accomplish the exploit. This reopening after a yearlong pandemic shutdown has been a resounding success. The summer 2021 season saw more than 3,400 visitors come to gaze upon the mythical Hermel and learn more about the now-famed sailor’s Atlantic sea voyage.

Paquette rowed this boat across the Atlantic Ocean. The 129-day odyssey was the first of its kind and drew worldwide media attention.

The Port of Sept-Îles acquired the Hermel in April 2014 and created a permanent exhibit space for it in the Sept-Îles marina that stands in tribute to her captain’s determination and the strength and tenacity the boat symbolizes for the community of Sept-Îles.

“This feat of courage, tenacity, and determination is in perfect symbiosis with the values of the Port of Sept-Îles,” said Pierre Gagnon, president and chief executive officer of the Port of Sept-Îles. “The Hermel exhibit is now a big draw for the community, schools, visitors, tourists, and cruise ship passengers. We are very proud of it. We are grateful for the invaluable work of the Tourisme Sept-Îles team to showcase this valuable piece of history.”

Pointe aux Basques Brings Happy Smiles to L’Envol Maison de la Famille

Crédit photo : Journal Le Nord-Côtier

Sept-Îles, August 18, 2021 – The Port of Sept-Îles and Microbrasserie La Compagnie are pleased to announce that, following their initial donation of $2,000 in December 2019, they have made a second donation of $3,000 to L’Envol-Maison de la famille from the sale of Pointe aux Basques beer.

Two years ago, at its open house event on the Mgr-Blanche wharf, the Port of Sept-Îles and Microbrasserie La Compagnie proudly unveiled a brand new commemorative beer called “Pointe aux Basques.” The new brew was the result of a joint initiative to mark the local port authority’s 20th anniversary. For each beer sold, the Port of Sept-Îles and Microbrasserie La Compagnie also pledged to make a donation to a community organization that supports families in Sept-Îles.

To continue this wonderful initiative with other local family support organizations, the Port of Sept-Îles and Microbrasserie La Compagnie are pleased to announce that their next donation will go to À La Source, which offers childbirth and breastfeeding support as well as accommodations for families from outside the region who come to Sept-Îles in anticipation of a birth.

“This partnership with Microbrasserie La Compagnie has exceeded all our expectations! We continue to believe in the importance of supporting organizations that help families, especially during this pandemic. We’re very happy that we’ve been able to help families who rely on L’Envol-Maison de la famille. This organization is a godsend for our community. The help and support it provides is invaluable, and we’re very proud of it. We’re thrilled about our new partnership with À la Source and hope we can meet some of the organization’s financial needs through the sale of this charity beer so that employees and volunteers can focus on client needs and not on fundraising,” said Pierre D. Gagnon, president and CEO of the Port of Sept-Îles.

“The entire La Compagnie team was proud to support L’Envol-Maison de la Famille through its day-to-day work. This was our first time getting involved in supporting a community organization. It gives us great pleasure to continue our mission to help families in the region, in partnership with the Port of Sept-Îles. We’re honoured to continue brewing Pointe aux Basques beer. To support us in our mission, all Sept-Îles residents have to do is enjoy it and drink it in moderation. There are worse things in life than sipping good beer for a good cause! We at La Compagnie brew beer for the people around here. We’re proud to carry on this tradition with À la Source,” said Billy Dumas, co-owner of La Compagnie.

“L’Envol-Maison de la Famille has been around for over 30 years! Through its mission, it has helped thousands of families over the years. We’re there for our families so they can be the best version of themselves and live their best lives. We put tools in place and find viable, realistic solutions to the situations they encounter in their daily lives,” said Bernice Villeneuve, executive director of the family organization.

Breathing new life into Parc Aylmer-Whittom – The Port of Sept-Îles and Ville de Sept-Îles announce a redevelopment partnership

Sept-Îles, July 13, 2021 – At a press conference this morning, Ville de Sept-Îles and the Port of Sept-Îles announced a partnership resulting in a financial contribution of $260,000 on behalf of the Port in the town’s Parc Aylmer-Whittom redevelopment project.

“Parc Aylmer-Whittom is one of our region’s real natural treasures. Its location along the bay is ideal, and everyone loves it. So when the idea of adding a maritime theme to the family play area was suggested, we immediately indicated that we wanted to contribute,” said Port of Sept-Îles president and chief executive officer Pierre D. Gagnon. “Adding interpretation panels that remind visitors of the rich maritime history of the Bay of Sept-Îles, from the days of the first Basque visitors to Jacques Cartier’s arrival in 1635 until today, will enhance the visitor experience.”

In addition to Port of Sept-Îles’ sizable contribution, the project will receive $100,000 from Fonds d’initiatives Nordiques according to Société du Plan Nord’s July 2 announcement.

Project summary

The redevelopment project aims to breathe new life into Parc Aylmer-Whittom, a site highly prized by locals and visitors alike. Work will begin in May 2022 and will include a complete overhaul of the reception area, which will get an entrance gate and a new sanitary building built to blend in with the landscape.

In the heart of the park, children will enjoy a safe new maritime-themed play area with novel facilities, including updated miniature houses. But the undeniable highpoint of this new family area will be a huge, 10-meter-long ship where budding explorers and pirates can take off on adventures!

As Sept-Îles mayor Réjean Porlier said, families have always been this project’s focus. He is “convinced that the improvements to ‘Squirrels Park’ will allow future generations to make their own indelible memories and enjoy nature in an exceptional environment just a stone’s throw from town.” He also stressed how important the park is as a tourist attraction: “It has everything tourists are looking for when they arrive in Sept-Îles.”

Other improvements include redoing the paths so they are less steep, removing the wooden stairs and bridges to make the park more accessible, and installing new signs and interpretation panels on the park’s paths and the Sentiers de la nature.

The total redevelopment cost is $1.1 million. Work should start in May and be completed in August 2022.

About Aylmer Whittom

At the press conference, Réjean Porlier and Pierre D. Gagnon stressed the importance of Aylmer Whittom’s bequest to Sept-Îles. An energetic man concerned about his fellow citizen’s well-being, Whittom was actively involved in the community and a city council member from 1973 to 2003. His legacy includes social housing, better quality of life for seniors, and tourism development projects. And it was Whittom who was responsible for getting development started at the mouth of Rivière des Rapides in 1975, turning the area into the park we know today and that was named after him a few years ago.
